STAGNER CASE TIMELINE
July 3, 2001: Michael Stagner, then 42, shoots seven people, all Latinos, in Rifle, late that evening. Four died of their wounds.
Oct. 8, 2002: A judge finds Stagner not guilty by reason of insanity and he is sentenced to the Colorado Department of Human Services until or if he is found to no longer require hospitalization.
November 2012: A judge agrees to allow Stagner to go on supervised outings from the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo.
2021: Stagner is allowed to go on unsupervised outings from the state mental hospital.
June 25, 2025: The state mental hospital files in court a “notice of temporary physical removal for treatment and rehabilitation — increased to community placement” for Stagner. It includes little publicly available information
