The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo will euthanize Khutzeymateen, their 35-year-old geriatric grizzly, on Sept. 30 after determining her health has too far deteriorated to treat any longer.
In a post shared on Friday, the zoo explained Khutzeymateen’s “health had significantly declined” and that while supportive care has kept her comfortable, “it may soon no longer be enough.”
She is currently the last remaining grizzly bear at the zoo after Skoki, a 33-year-old bear, passed in early September.

“This decision is an act of love, compassion, respect and responsibility for Khutzy,” the post wrote. “It is the final gift we can give her after a lifetime of care, ensuring she does not experience unnecessary suffering.”
