CINCINNATI (WXIX) - In November of 2023, the Cincinnati Reds’ front office had some financial flexibility to work with. They were looking to add a couple of impact pitchers, and the front office’s first aggressive moves to add to the team’s young core were signing Emilio Pagán and Nick Martinez on the same day (December 1).

“I bet on this organization and this team to be a playoff contender,” Martinez said. “This is what I signed up for. This year, we’re definitely up to that.”

Pagán was a solid middle relief pitcher during a 2024 season where he was banged up, and Martinez was voted the team’s pitcher of the year last season.

This year, Pagán has been a strong closer. Martinez has been the “Wild Card” bouncing between the rotation and the bullpen.
