Things are certainly trending down for Arkansas football and coach Sam Pittman.

The Razorbacks were crushed at home 56-13 by Notre Dame on Saturday, Sept. 27, marking their third consecutive loss. Arkansas blew an 18-point lead on the road against Memphis in Week 4, and also fell just short of a comeback win against Ole Miss the week prior.

Pittman, in his sixth season with the program, now has a 32-34 record at Arkansas. His tenure is highlighted by a 9-win finish in 2021, but hasn't finished the year ranked in any of his other five seasons.

Pittman, 63, may be nearing his end as Arkansas' head coach as the Razorbacks continue to struggle.

Here's a look at Pittman's contract details and buyout:

Sam Pittman buyout

Pittman has an interesting clause in his contract, which determines how much his contract buyout is. His current contract was signed after the 2021 season.

Pittman will be owed $9.3 million if he was fired in the coming days, according to his contract documents obtained by the USA TODAY Network. If his record since 2021 dips below .500 by the end of the season, he's owed $5.7 million. If his record since 2021 is at .500 or better at the end of the season, he'll be owed 8.5 million if he's to be fired.

Pittman's record since 2021 currently sits at 29-27 after the Notre Dame loss, which is held up by his 9-4 finish in 2021. Arkansas may wait to fire Pittman, if they decide to go that path at all, for if the wheels fall off for the Razorbacks, as the buyout total goes down if Arkansas continues to lose.

Sam Pittman contract

Pittman signed a new contract that was announced in June 2022, shortly after he guided Arkansas to a 9-4 record and a victory over Penn State in what was then known as the Outback Bowl. The nine wins were the Razorbacks' most in a decade and came just two years after they went 2-10 in the final season of the disastrous and short-lived Chad Morris era.

The deal was originally set to expire on Dec. 31, 2026, but by virtue of a 7-win season in 2022, the contract was automatically extended one more year, to Dec. 31, 2027.

The new contract elevated Pittman's annual salary to $5 million. Last season, according to the USA TODAY coaches salary database, Pittman made $6,498,000 in total earnings, including $6,450,000 in pay from the university.
