Utah and the Federal Trade Commission filed an agreement in federal court Thursday with Kars-R-Us.com and its operators, accusing them of devising a national charity fraud scheme that generated more than $45.5 million by falsely representing how donations would be used.
The Utah Department of Commerce’s Division of Consumer Protection and the Office of the Utah Attorney General alleged Kars falsely represented that donations would go toward “saving lives.” Eighteen other states joined the lawsuit underlying the agreement and asked a court to enter it as a stipulated judgment.
