IQALUIT — The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Iqaluit have lifted a shelter-in-place order that lasted nearly 14 hours. The order was issued following reports of gunfire from a residence on Tasilik Street. Police received the first reports of shots fired at 12:50 a.m. on Saturday.

According to a news release from the RCMP, additional shots were fired from the home when officers arrived at the scene. In response, the police issued a shelter-in-place order through the Alert Ready System at 1:18 a.m. to ensure public safety.

By 5 p.m. the same day, the RCMP announced via Facebook that the shelter-in-place advisory had been lifted, allowing residents to return to the area. Authorities confirmed that one individual is in custody, but they did not provide details on any potential injuries resulting from the incident.

The police stated that officers would remain on the scene to continue their investigation. They assured the public that there is no longer a threat to safety in the area.
