New Mexico State needed to pile on.

The Aggies (2-2) had a 17-7 lead against New Mexico (3-1) in the second quarter, and had a grand opportunity at the 8:25 mark to extend it when UNM's Shawn Miller muffed a punt deep in Lobos territory at the 21-yard line. NM State threw that chance in an incinerator when they lost 14 yards on the drive and missed a 51-yard field goal.

The Aggies were given another opportunity later in the quarter when they stuffed UNM's fourth-and-one attempt at its own 41-yard line. NM State quarterback Logan Fife threw an 18-yard pass, but he threw a bad interception into tight coverage on the next play. He had targeted slants in similar tight windows beforehand, and it bit him when that led to a tip-drill interception for Lobos safety Xavier Slayton.
