Kirra Wright has claimed Australia's first medal of the World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi.

Wright, making her world titles debut, won silver in the women's shot put (F36) on the opening day of competition.

The 17-year-old twice set a personal best, with her 8.30 metres in the fourth round enough for her to claim a podium finish behind Dutch gold medallist Cheyenne Bouthoorn (9.62m).

"It's pretty unreal, I didn't think it was going to happen," Wright said.

"The biggest thing for me was going out there and talking to different people, and meeting new people.

"A medal wasn't even on the cards."

Wright will next compete in the women's 100m (T36) on Tuesday.

Among other Australian results, Telaya Blacksmith finished eighth in the women's 400m (T20) final.
