For the second time in the first four weeks of the season, the trusty foot of Nick Volpone was the critical factor in a Wilkes victory.

Volpone drilled a 26-yarder with 41 seconds remaining, and the Colonels held off a hard charge from Montclair State in the second half to defeat the Red Hawks 24-21.

The Wilkes defense carried the team to a 14-0 halftime lead, but Montclair State showed some big-play ability in the second half to fight back.

Touchdown passes of 70 and 75 yards from Red Hawks quarterback Luke Henrich made it a 14-14 game in the fourth quarter. After the two teams traded touchdowns, it was a 21-21 game when the Colonels took over after forcing a Montclair State punt.
