SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The only contested City Council race this fall has a bit of twist to it in that the race features two candidates who are already council members.

Councilwoman at-large and Council Pro Tem Chanell Elston has decided to run for the Ward 1 council seat that was vacated in the spring when 19-year councilwoman and former council president Ruth Gray resigned to move to Arizona.

In May, council members selected Mark McMillian to succeed Gray in Ward 1. McMillian is filling out the remainder of Gray’s term, which concludes Dec. 31, 2025. He has since opted to seek election in hopes of retaining the seat for a full, four-year term.

Here is some background on each candidate, and their email answers to questions posed to them by cleveland.com.
