Polish skier Andrzej Bargiel made history this week as the first person to have climbed and skied down Mount Everest without the aid of bottled oxygen, The New York Times reported.

The journey was Bargiel’s third attempt at climbing the tallest mountain on earth at 8,849 metres (29,032ft) high – after deadly conditions forced the 37-year-old to abandon earlier attempts in 2019 and 2022, The Guardian highlighted.

“It’s one of the most important milestones in my sports career,” Bargiel said in a statement, highlighting the difficult route to the mountain. “The summit itself was arduous and difficult. I’d never spent so much time at such an altitude in my life, so that was a challenge in itself,” Bargiel shared.
