NEW BEDFORD — There are numerous New Bedford residents throwing their hats into the upcoming 2025 municipal election . The preliminary election for at-large city councilors will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 7, and the top 10 at-large council candidates will be on the ballot in the municipal election on Nov. 4.

There are 12 current candidates for at-large councilor. The preliminary is held when there are twice the number of candidates running for the seats that are open, plus one. That means at least 11 candidates for the five at-large council seats available.

There won’t be preliminaries for any of the ward seats, none of which had the required three or more candidates, or for the School Committee.
