In the 1970s, former United States Presidents Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon signed a proclamation establishing Sept. 24 as National Good Neighbor Day. The altruistic observance was the vision of Becky Mattson of Lakeside, Montana, who recognized society’s increasing reliance on technologies rendered citizens less likely to socialize with those present in their own neighborhoods.

Now observed on Sept. 28, the concept is perhaps more relevant than ever, promoting kindness and connection among neighbors.
