Large fire at metal recycler burning in DeWitt; smoke can be seen for miles

DeWitt, N.Y. — A fire at a metal recycling facility in DeWitt is sending up black smoke that can be seen for miles on Sunday morning.

The fire at Metalico at 6225 Thompson Road was reported at 6:37 a.m., according to the Onondaga County 911 Center. It’s still burning at 9:30 a.m.

Firefighters on the scene said scrap metal was burning, but no buildings are on fire. The blaze was originally reported as a brush fire.

DeWitt Fire Department is on the scene along with other departments.

The fire is just outside the city of Syracuse near James Street and Thompson Road.
