It's a feature of modern life that older people lament that we throw things away rather than get them repaired. The old adeage of "make do and mend" has been replaced with "it's broken? Bin it and get a new one".

However, for many people there is a sense that we cannot afford to keep filling landfill or feeding incinerators and that fixing things is a better, more cost-effective and more eco way forward.

Whether its a pair of boots which have seen better days, and old clock which has stopped ticking, a pair of jeans which could do with a few well placed stiches, then the forthcoming Mutley Repair Cafe day on Thursday October 2 at Mutley Baptist church may be what turns the tide on the horror that is planned obsolescence.
