The Sam Pittman era at Arkansas has come to an end.
The sixth-year coach was fired Sunday following a 56-13 loss to Notre Dame that dropped the Razorbacks to 2-3 to start the season. Pittman's team was also coming off a one-point road loss to Group of Five opponent Memphis.
Pittman will not coach the remainder of the year, but he's being replaced with someone Arkansas fans are well acquainted with. In a statement announcing Pittman's firing, it also named offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino interim head coach.
Petrino, who was reportedly lobbying for the interim position in the event Pittman was fired, certainly has some history in Fayetteville. He was the head coach of the Razorbacks from 2008-11, but he was fired for cause ahead of the 2012 season after a motorcycle accident revealed an extramarital affair between Petrino and a football staffer.
He left Arkansas with a 34-17 record, including two double-digit win seasons and a Sugar Bowl appearance in 2010.
Petrino later coached at Western Kentucky, Louisville and Missouri State, but he returned to Arkansas last season to serve as Pittman's offensive coordinator. Now, he's taking Pittman's place as the head coach of the Razorbacks once again.
The question is: Will Petrino be in the mix to land the full-time job?
