GRAND BLANC, MI -- She was reminding her son to be ready for lacrosse and putting together a crockpot dinner when she saw the smoke start to rise outside her kitchen window Sunday morning.

Across McCandlish Road, the neighbor -- who asked not to be identified -- could see the fallout from the shooting and fire at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Ten people had been shot in the church, including two fatally after a 40-year-old Burton man rammed his vehicle into the building before he exited and opened fire on individuals using an assault rifle.

Police said they believe the man also set a large fire that quickly spread, creating a chaotic crime scene that residents were still trying to fathom just after the attack.
