CLEVELAND — The historic season-long comeback, the likes of which the major leagues have never seen, is complete.
The Guardians clinched the American League Central division on the last day of the regular season via the Detroit Tigers ' loss to the Boston Red Sox . Even though Cleveland's game hadn't finished at the time, the Tigers losing was enough for the Guardians to secure their second consecutive division title.
In doing so, the Guardians raced back from what was once a 15.5-game deficit against the Tigers, the largest comeback in baseball history. The previous record was 15.0 games, held by the 1914 Boston Braves.
On Sept. 27, Cleveland secured their place in the playoffs with a walk-off hit-by-pitch.
