SHREVEPORT, La. -- When the company that makes stun guns announced it would stop supporting the older Taser X2, city officials had no choice but to act.

Now, taxpayers are on the hook for more than $111,000 to replace the outdated devices -- a five-year contract that ensures city marshals won’t be left with equipment the manufacturer will no longer service.

The deal locks in payments of about $25,399 this year and $21,594 each year through 2029, all drawn directly from local tax dollars.

Shreveport City Marshals training director and purchasing agent Jonathan Ponder confirmed the purchase, telling KTBS, “The Shreveport City Marshal’s Office is purchasing 30 Axon Taser 10’s and not replacing any body cameras.”

The move comes after Axon announced it discontinued support for the Taser X2
