Tom’s Magic lived up to his favourite’s billing in the $400,000 Breeders’ Stakes on Sunday. But it was much more dramatic than his backers would have liked.
The U.S.-based runner returned to Woodbine a little more than a month after his second-place finish in the King’s Plate and captured the third leg of the Canadian triple crown, having to judge a very slow pace early in the race then holding off a long shot late.
Ridden by Rafael Hernandez, Tom’s Magic got a nice mid-pack tracking spot early in the 1 1/2-mile race behind early pacesetter D’aurum. Sensing a walking pace with a lot of jostling going on within the nine-horse field, Tom’s Magic moved up to press the issue along the backstretch but remained well in hand.
