The idea for the first “100 Club” started in Detroit in 1950. A local businessman named William Packer befriended a young police officer while he was walking his beat. Not long after their meeting and friendship developed, the officer was killed in the line of duty.
Packer immediately thought of the officer’s young family left fatherless and reached out to 100 of his friends, encouraging them to donate to a fund for the officer’s family, to help get them through the incredibly emotional and financially trying time. All 100 friends donated money.
