NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — After an unseasonably hot Sunday that felt more like July than late September, relief is on the way for the tri-state area this week.

Fall air set to return to tri-state midweek after record warmth

Short-range weather models are signaling a significant push of fall air by midweek, replacing the recent stretch of summer-like warmth that’s taken many by surprise.

On Sunday, Newark, New Jersey, soared to a high of 89 degrees, breaking the previous daily record set exactly 10 years ago. Other parts of the region also recorded temperatures well into the 80s.

The burst of warmth has been strong enough to swing the overall monthly average for September from below normal to now running slightly above average, about +1°F or more compared to climatological norms.
