Australian Jake Matthews is keeping his fingers crossed after suffering a controversial third-round submission loss to Haitian Neil Magny at UFC Fight Night in Perth on Sunday.

The referee stopped the welterweight fight just a second before the bell sounded to end round one when Matthews had a struggling Magny in a submission hold.

Magny immediately protested, and the referee allowed the fight to continue.

Matthews dominated round two, but Magny hit back in round three to secure the submission victory.

Matthews’ team quickly flagged their intention to appeal.

“The fight stoppage is currently under review by the state combat commission,” Matthews himself wrote on Sunday night.
