NEW YORK (PIX11) – Gov. Kathy Hochul is warning New Yorkers of an alleged scheme targeting the recipients of inflation refund checks.

State residents have received text messages, phone calls, emails and mailings saying that bank information is required to get the money, according to Hochul. She emphasized that the state will never ask for personal information and is not directly depositing checks into eligible New Yorkers' bank accounts, but sending them by mail.

The state provided an example of the alleged scheme, sent to someone via text:

Residents who are eligible to receive a check do not have to do anything. The checks will automatically be sent to the address on file from their 2024 tax return, according to Hochul.
