OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — National Gold Star Mothers and Family Day is a day of remembrance and honor held on the last Sunday of September for the mothers and families of fallen military service members.

In observance of the national occasion a ceremony was held to present a flag to the family of U.S Navy Petty Officer Jared Craig.

Members of the Owensboro community gathered at Smother's Park with performances from students of the Whitesville Elementary School Choir and a gun salute from the V-F-W Post 696 Color Guard.

Craig died October 2nd, 2013, while on duty in Florida. His sister Tara Garrison spoke about his life and legacy during Sunday’s event.

Garrison was asked about the ceremony by Cathy Mullins whose son was killed while serving in Afghanistan.
