It was the best chance the Mets had all game.

First baseman Pete Alonso stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and the Mets trailing 4-0 with two outs in the fifth inning.

He wasted no time, turning on a first-pitch sinker, lasering it to left field. It was the hardest hit ball in the game, clocking in at 115.9 mph (Baseball Savant) with a .780 xBA (expected batting average).

There were nine balls hit in this game with an xBA of .600 or higher. All fell for hits, except Alonso’s.

Alonso looked in bemusement as Marlins left fielder Javier Sanoja leaped to rob him of a two-run double. Shorstop Francisco Lindor ran over from second base and shared some words of encouragement, and followed with a hug.
