A Riverhead teenager was killed when his car struck a tree on Sound Avenue near Horton Avenue in Calverton on Saturday night, according to Town of Riverhead police.

The 16-year-old, whom police said they are not identifying because he was a minor, was driving a maroon Honda Civic east on Sound Avenue at around 9:20 p.m. when the car struck a tree in front of the Cornell University Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center, according to a news release. He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead where he was pronounced dead.

The teenager was alone in the car and it was a single-car crash, a spokeswoman told Newsday.
