Launching his national tour at a sold-out RAC Arena on Tuesday night, iconic Aussie storyteller Paul Kelly revealed to local fans they would be part of history as he teased the sequel to his 1996 classic How To Make Gravy.

Accompanied by his backing band, including nephew and guitarist Dan Kelly, Kelly said his follow-up ballad Rita Wrote A Letter had never been played in front of a live audience.

“This is the first time playing it in front of people,” the 70-year-old admitted.

How To Make Gravy famously tells the story of despairing prisoner Joe, who regretfully writes to his family about not making it home to celebrate the festive season.
