The tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk sheds a disturbing light on what is happening to the First Amendment. Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with Kirk’s political positions and style, there is no room in America to take away his right to free speech.

President Donald Trump missed the opportunity to remind us about this principle when he decided to pivot comments to the press away from the Kirk shooting and onto a relatively trivial topic (White House ballroom renovations). Jimmy Kimmel made critical and disrespectful comments directed at Trump’s decision on his TV show. However, there also is no room to take away Kimmel’s right to free speech.

Freedom of speech is a two-way street. If the current presidential regime does not believe that, then they should declare outright that
