Dear Eco-Monkey: I am stockpiling large plastic bags filled with Styrofoam food containers and egg cartons, hoping that recycling options for these will eventually become available. Any recommendations would be helpful.
Thanks, A Recycling Enthusiast
Dear Fellow Recycling Enthusiast: Your dedication to recycling is extremely admirable! Unfortunately, I have some bad news about your Styrofoam (which is plastic #6, known as polystyrene foam) stockpiles: it’s time for the trash bin when it comes to those cartons and containers. They cannot be recycled — and while one should never say never, it’s a safe bet that a recycling solution for that material isn’t on the horizon.
The most sustainable path for polystyrene isn’t recycling — it’s preventing it from being made in the first place. Thank
