YOUNGSTOWN A Boardman man convicted of assaulting a police officer in 2021 is asking a judge for early release from prison, and the prosecutor's office isn't fighting it.

Damian Cessna, 28, was sent to a state prison in late July after receiving a four-to-six-year sentence for the incident in which a police officer shot and wounded him.

Cessna’s lawyer, Mark Lavelle, filed the request for "judicial release" with the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas on Aug. 4. The motion asks the court to let Cessna out early, supervised under probation, or "community control sanctions," as state law allows.
