Reports of scam calls are on the rise, with Ofcom issuing a warning to UK households that while calls may appear legitimate, "there are no circumstances in which Ofcom will call you out of the blue."

The regulator warned that scammers have obtained personal information from members of the public.

Ofcom said: "However, while these calls might look legitimate, there are no circumstances in which Ofcom will call you out of the blue to ask for your personal or financial details."

According to Ofcom, callers have told victims their names have been used to take out services, then asked for personal information.

The scammers then say they will put the victim through to the police.

Scammers use phone numbers which look as if they come from Ofcom, including 020 7981 3040, 020 7981
