President Donald Trump's attendance at the Ryder Cup golf tournament wasn't enough to spur the U.S. team to victory, and their European opponents had fun rubbing it in, evoking a good-natured response from the president.

The European team led by star golfers such as Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose posted a video online brandishing the Ryder Cup trophy and taunting Trump.

In the video, the golfers chant "Are you watching? Are you watching? Are you watching Don... are you watching Donald Trump?"

Trump shared the video online and responded "Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations!"

An avid golfer who owns numerous courses, Trump on Sept. 26 attended the opening day of the Ryder Cup - the storied biennial competition between the top American and European golfers – with his granddaughter Kai, predominately watching from behind a bullet-proof glass enclosure set up behind the first tee on the Black Course at New York's Bethpage State Park.

Despite his cheerleading for the American team led by Scottie Scheffler, the world's top-ranked golfer, the European team was able to hold off a late U.S. rally and hold onto the cup.

The White House is taking credit for this year's Ryder Cup even happening after Trump signed a recent executive order to try to prevent a rail strike on Long Island. The order created an emergency board to investigate disputes between the Long Island Rail Road and unions.

Trump's appearance at the Ryder Cup is just the latest in a string of recent trips to prominent athletic events for the sports-obsessed president. Two weeks into his second White House term, Trump became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. He followed it up the next weekend with a lap in his presidential limousine around the track at Daytona International Speedway before the Daytona 500.
