United States President Donald Trump on Monday said that he will be imposing a 100% tariff on films made outside the country.

“Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby’,” Trump said on social media.

The US president claimed that California “has been particularly hard hit” because of its “weak and incompetent governor”.

Several film studios are located in California, particularly in Los Angeles.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, from the Opposition Democratic party, is a Trump rival.

The levies will be introduced “to solve this long time, never ending problem”, the US president said.

Trump had in May threatened to impose a tariff on foreign films but had not provided any details.
