Northern Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District will never top the lists of competitive U.S. House seats that are compiled by D.C. insiders. The district, in pretty much its current form, has been in Republican hands since 2010, and U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany has consistently carried the region with around 60% of vote since he won a 2019 special election to replace fellow Republican Sean Duffy.
Duffy, who quit Congress to become a TV commentator, is now Donald Trump’s secretary of transportation. And Tiffany announced his bid last week for the 2026 Republican nomination for governor — a contest where he will likely be the frontrunner.
The decision by Tiffany, a former legislator, to return to state politics sparked immediate speculation about which Republican would replace him in Washington.
