Jokoryu Takayuki, a Japanese sumo wrestler, performed the traditional Shiomaki ritual in Tokyo to ward off evil spirits and offer strength and blessings to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

As part of the Vishwa Sewa Pakhwada organised by the Indian Minorities Federation in Japan, Jokoryu Takayuki carried out the ritual, which involves throwing salt into the sumo ring – a practice deeply rooted in Shinto beliefs, symbolising spiritual purification and protection from negative energies.

While performing the ritual, Jokoryu conveyed his birthday wishes to PM Modi, saying in Japanese, “Tanjoubi Omedetou, Modi” (Happy Birthday, Modi).
