DES MOINES, Iowa —

Just under $10 million will go towards mitigating forever chemicals, or PFAS, in central Iowa's water sources.

They've been linked to increased risks of cancer, reproductive issues, and pregnancy complications, among other things. As for where the chemicals and the money came from, Des Moines Water Works joined a class action lawsuit against 3M, claiming their water system has been impacted by PFAS they manufactured.

In July, Des Moines Water Works found out they'd be awarded $9.7 million.

But now that they've started to receive some of that settlement money, it still isn't clear exactly how it will be used. In their meeting on Tuesday, the Des Moines Water Works Board explained that they'd be transferring the money to Central Iowa Water Works, allowing them to manag
