SOUTHPORT, N.C. — Gov. Josh Stein joined local leaders Monday in Southport, offering support and calling for action following a mass shooting at the American Fish Company that left three people dead and five others injured.

Police say 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge of Oak Island fired from a small boat into the crowd Saturday night before fleeing toward the Intracoastal Waterway. He was arrested about 30 minutes later at an Oak Island boat ramp and is now facing multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder. He is being held without bond.

Brunswick County Sheriff Brian Chism urged the community not to let the tragedy define them.
