GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Great Smoky Mountains National Park said cleanup efforts are still underway after a "significant" landslide blocked access to the Gatlinburg Bypass Saturday.
In the park's first update since Saturday, the park said the landslide occurred near the Great Smoky Mountains picture sign on the Bypass around noon. Park officials said nearly three and a half inches of rain fell between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. that morning.
The landslide covered 150 feet of roadway with one to four feet of mud and debris, blocking both lanes of travel.
Park officials said crews removed more than 70 loads of debris from the road through Saturday and Sunday. Crews are continuing to clear debris from the road drainage, ditches and a culvert, which is currently blocked.
