Election day in the city of St. John’s has been changed to October 8th.

The city made the change due to the strike at Canada Post, which has resulted in some ballots cast through the mail-in system being stuck in limbo.

Chief Returning Officer and City Clerk Theresa Walsh says they worked with CUPW and Canada Post to retrieve vote-by-mail kits in the system, however there may still be some left unaccounted for.

The date of the election has been pushed back by a week to give the city time to get additional resources ready to support higher demand for in-person voting, and to set up a portal by which people can check the status of their ballot.

That portal will be operational in the coming days. Once the portal is live, people can also contact the city directly for assistance.
