KAILUA-KONA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Construction crews have finally broken ground on a new homeless shelter project.

The Kukuiola Emergency Shelter and Assessment Center will be located off Kealakehe Parkway.

The $14 million facility will include 16 emergency shelters, a 2,000-square-foot assessment center, community restroom facilities with showers, a 1,400-square-foot community center, and a shared kitchen.

A designated parking lot for people to sleep in their vehicles overnight is also included in the plans.

Additionally, office space for case management services and resources will be provided, along with open areas for community-building activities.
