GRAND BLANC, Mich. — Authorities have identified the man who attacked a Mormon church in Michigan as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a former U.S. Marine from the Burton, Michigan, area.

According to the Marine Corps, Sanford served from 2004 to 2008, including a seven-month deployment to Iraq, and was discharged at the rank of sergeant.

Police say Sanford drove a pickup truck into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township on Sunday morning, then opened fire on congregants before setting the building on fire with gasoline. He was shot and killed by officers about eight minutes after the attack began.

Investigators also recovered improvised explosive devices in connection with the attack, and bomb squads searched Sanford’s home for additional evidence,
