Police in Tamil Nadu have arrested Mathiyalagan, the Karur district secretary of star-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), in connection with the stampede that killed 41 people on Saturday night.

Earlier, the police FIR had named him as well as TVK’s state general secretary ‘Bussy’ Anand and deputy general secretary Nirmal Kumar, but not Vijay himself.

Separately, three people were arrested for allegedly spreading rumours on social media about the stampede, Chennai police said.

The FIR charged the organisers with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide, endangering the life of others, and disobedience to lawful order, in addition to provisions under the state’s public property law. It stated that permission was granted for 10,
