Residents in Ninnekah are reacting to a notice sent by the local school district notifying them of an upcoming increase in property taxes.

Notices sent by Ninnekah Public School District say residents can expect property taxes to increase by 75% as the district works to pay off a multi-million dollar settlement.

The $7.5 million settlement involved a former teacher convicted of sexually assaulting students,

However, residents in Ninnekah, a town of roughly 800 people, are displeased with the tax increase.

District leaders say the first year is about a 75% tax increase, while the second year will drop to only a 32% increase of the base tax rate. The third year will drop again to only a 29% increase.
