A new strategic plan being developed by Niagara Regional Police needs a greater focus on equity, diversity and inclusion, said police services board members.

Board vice-chair Nyarayi Kapisavanhu said equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) was identified as a major issue during consultations as the plan was being developed in May and June, but was listed as a “sub-initiative” in the draft document presented at Thursday’s board meeting.

She asked why EDI was not made a core pillar in the plan, “given the continued community feedback around racism, discrimination and cultural safety.”

Board members voted to send the document back to Chief Bill Fordy for revision, to identify EDI as a top priority within the plan that will guide the service until 2029.
