A Hamilton-based spill response company was fined $10,000 under Ontario’s Environmental Protection Act for illegally dumping waste on unapproved land in Welland two years ago.
A news release on the Ontario government’s court bulletin site said Green Response Environmental & Rail Inc. (GR Environmental) was convicted last year. The company also paid a $2,500 victim surcharge and was given six months to pay the fine.
The case stems from a train derailment in Port Colborne in March 2023, on the north side of Main Street West beside the weir.
Three rail cars operated by Gio Rail came off the tracks, spilling approximately 56 tonnes of Ontario wheat onto the rail line and into a municipal parking lot. Two cars were parked nearby, but no one was injured and no vehicles were damaged.
