Tupelo police say an arrest has been made in a car theft reported last month on Carnation Street.

Officers responded to the theft on Aug. 15, 2025, and obtained a description of the vehicle from the owner. Several hours later, the Oxford Police Department notified Tupelo that the vehicle had been recovered in Oxford and the driver had been taken into custody there on unrelated charges, authorities said.

Following further investigation, 31-year-old Montrell O. Pegues, of New Albany, was charged on Sept. 25 with Theft of a Motor Vehicle. On Sept. 26, Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Weir set bond at $20,000. Police said the case will be presented to the Lee County Grand Jury.

All charges are accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
