A herd of 40 goats cleared two acres of undesirable plants from a green burial section at Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls last week.

The city’s cemeteries department was looking for an innovative and eco-friendly approach to land management for Willow’s Rest, Niagara’s first green burial section, as opposed to traditionally using prescribed burns to manage naturalized spaces.

“We had heard that Niagara Parks had done it and also OPG (Ontario Power Generation) in the area had done it for phragmites remediation,” said manager of cemeteries Jean-Paul Narbonne.

“They shared the farmer’s contact information and we had them come out, we did an inspection with them and he said, ‘yeah, this is exactly what they do’ and it was incredible.”
