Events will be held across Niagara next week to promote fire prevention week, with this year’s theme being lithium-ion batteries.

Ben Trendle, chief fire prevention officer in Niagara Falls, said the annual theme is established by the National Fire Protection Association.

“They look at fire trends across North America in the year before and where we’re seeing property loss and loss of life as a result of fires and try to target a specific theme each year to reduce those fires and raise awareness about those fire safety concerns,” he said.

“This year is Charge into Fire Safety, focusing on lithium-ion batteries in your home — cellphones, laptops or we’re even seeing some scooters or things like that are running from different types of batteries that we’re not used to.”
