Through the first four games of the season, the Colorado State Rams’ offense has been stuck in the mud. With a 1-3 record, featuring losses to the Washington Huskies, UTSA Roadrunners, and Washington State Cougars, the Rams boast the 126th-best scoring offense in the nation, averaging 13.3 points per game.
The results were enough for head coach Jay Norvell to make a change going into Week 6, and one that probably wasn’t easy to make.
On Monday morning, Norvell announced that he would be handing play-calling duties over to associate head coach Matt Mumme for the upcoming game against the San Diego State Aztecs. The Rams do not have an offensive coordinator listed on their coaching staff, but Mumme is the de facto leader in that role, serving as the team's passing-game coordinator.
While it was likely a difficult decision for Norvell to relinquish play-calling duties, he explained in his weekly press conference on Monday that it would not be a significant change for the offense.
"I think a lot of people have a lot of misconceptions about play-calling, to be honest with you. Our motto is ‘we over me’, and we’re going to make decisions that are going to help the football team. Matt and I have been handling the offense for a long time — 9 years together — Matt’s going to communicate with the quarterback this week," Norvell said, according to The Coloradoan."We’re just going to change it up that way. I think a lot of people have a lot of different misconceptions about how staff works and how we work on offense, but that’s how we’ll handle it this week."
Before his time at Colorado State, Mumme served as the offensive coordinator for the Nevada Wolfpack from 2017 to 2021, working under Norvell.
There is hope that this change will spark a new energy in the Rams’ offense, which is sorely needed at this time. Through the first four games of the season, Colorado State ranks 97th in total offense (335.3 yards per game), 91st in rushing offense (128.0 yards per game), and 82nd in passing offense (207.3 yards per game).
They will have a chance to prove what the change can bring this weekend against San Diego State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. PT. That game will air on CBS Sports Network.
